Long ago, when the seasons turned and the harvest was complete, the Khmer people began to celebrate the coming of a new year.
known today as Khmer New Year.
It is a sacred moment when the old year ends and a new angel arrives to bless the land.
People celebrate this festival to give thanks for the past year, to honor their ancestors, and to pray for happiness, prosperity, and peace in the year ahead.
Families return home, temples are filled with offerings, and joyful games bring everyone together.
It is not just a celebration—it is the heart of Khmer spirit, where tradition, family, and hope are reborn with every new year.
In ancient times, there was a powerful celestial being named Kabil Moha Prum, known for his great wisdom and pride. One day, he challenged a young human prodigy named Thomabal to answer a sacred riddle. If Thomabal failed, he would lose his life—but if Kabil Moha Prum lost, he must sacrifice himself.
With intelligence and guidance from divine beings, Thomabal solved the riddle correctly. True to his word, Kabil Moha Prum accepted defeat.
However, his head possessed immense power
if it touched the earth, the world would burn; if thrown into the sky, it would bring drought, if cast into the ocean, it would dry the seas.
To protect the world, his seven daughters, the celestial angels, took turns carrying his sacred head in a ceremonial procession around Mount Meru each year.
This divine ritual became the origin of Khmer New Year, marking the passing of time, the arrival of a new angel, and the renewal of life.
It reminds people of wisdom, sacrifice, and the eternal cycle of the world.

During Khmer New Year, Khmer families prepare a table full of traditional dishes, not only to eat, but to honor tradition and share blessings.
Preparing these foods is a way for Khmer people to express respect, strengthen family bonds, and celebrate togetherness. It is believed that by sharing a rich and joyful meal, the new year will be filled with happiness, abundance, and peace.
